Vehicles are kind of like snowflakes. No two are the same, even if they are the same make, model and year, because each has a unique past. How it handles, what the seats feel like and where the buttons are will all be different based on who made it and who drove it before you.

Spend time with every new vehicle you drive to get a feel for it before you head out.

  • You might spend some time reading the owner’s manual, especially if you have a new vehicle with lots of bells and whistles.
  • Adjust the seat so your right foot can reach the gas and brake comfortably and you have at least 10–12 inches of space between you and the wheel.
  • Get familiar with the dashboard:
    • Speedometer
    • Symbols for warning signs
    • Gas/battery meter and which side to pump/charge
  • Check to see where the turn signal, wiper blades, lights and emergency button are and that you know how to use
them correctly.
  • Know where the temperature, volume and other controls are and how to use them.
